Appreciating the Gift of Life - Taking CPR With Your Family
70Keeping Current
As a Registered Nurse, I have maintained current CPR certification, no questions asked, since graduation in 1983.
While working in a hospital or community agency, CPR was automatically included in orientation and annual, mandated competency - based training. As a Nursing Professor for a local university, I needed to find my own CPR training.
In May, 2011, I called my local Emergency Medical Services, as my CPR certification was due to expire. I learned that my county has a training building for paramedics, county employees and anyone who wishes to become certified (or re-certified) in Heartsaver CPR / AED (Adult, Child, & Infant) and First Aid.
Opening my Eyes
I am ashamed to admit that I dreaded attending CPR class. This was probably my 15th training, conservatively speaking. The last few classes were quite hum drum, "the same old, same old".
Please do not misunderstand me. I love being a nurse and always have. And the thought of performing CPR on an unresponsive person is as automatic to me as a response to a fire drill or any other life emergency.
Even so, I was thoroughly underwhelmed at the thought of a 4-hour class on the same day that I was due to teach in the evening. I arrived at the EMS training building on a sunny May day, expecting my classmates to be paramedics. Instead, I trained with three fabulous county office staff, who were fulfilling their annual training requirements.
For the next several hours, we were thoroughly captivated by Debbi Julius (AHA BLS Instructor). She taught us with heart and soul.
Food for Thought
Debbi taught a powerful and meaningful experiential course that provided my Heartsaver CPR AED Re - Certification for Adults.
Quickly discovering her passion and skill as an Instructor, Debbi also demonstrates a deep sense of community. She has taken on a personal mission to raise the awareness of our families, schools and church members in our area.
She recently volunteered to teach a 4-hour CPR class free of charge to eight members of a local school community. This group had saved a young boy from choking on a school bus ride. Debbi structured the class around what the group had done correctly and what they might do differently in the future.
We were reminded of the importance of never having children (anyone) eat while in a moving car or bus. In the above scenario, the little boy had choked on two marshmallows, a big culprit for choking. It was not immediately evident that there was a second marshmallow lodged in his throat.
In closing, Debbi shared the following nugget of wisdom that I had never considered:
** Think about your next Baby Shower present. Have you considered a gift certificate for CPR for the new parents (or mother)? What good is that pretty little outfit if you do not know how to save your choking baby?
A Plan is Hatched
I could think of little else on the ride home. I immediately discussed my brainstorm with my husband, who actually loved the idea!
In a few short days, my family was gathering for a Mass in honor of Mom's birthday. We were planning to have dinner at a local restaurant, where the kids could run free and easy and no one minded much.
At just the right moment, I shouted my intentions! Please understand that I had to, as it was quite loud in the restaurant! I truly believe my family was too shocked to say anything but "OK" when I announced that I would be treating everyone to a CPR training class as an early holiday gift!
After some calls and coordination, we agreed on the date of October 1st for the training.
The Day of Class Arrives
Well, eight of us arrived, and I was so proud that we were remarkably, sorta on time. {OK, my brother got a little lost, even though he lives a few minutes from training, so no big shakes!}
I can read my family like a book, and I know some of them weren't too crazy about this idea at first. Yet, I could see everyone immediately warming up to Debbi's interactive and informative communication style.
Debbi gave us real life scenarios, especially with children and infants, just like the little ones in our family.
More nuggets of wisdom that Debbi shared with us:
- At holiday meals, have parents sit with their children. Often the "kid table" is in a different room. What if your child is choking? You do not see it; other kids may think the child is playing or not notice.
- If you are feeding you baby, pay attention. Parents can turn their backs to stir pots, cook and the child is choking (soundless).
- All of us tend to eat too fast. Remember to chew food thoroughly and encourage your children to do the same.
- Please do not eat in moving vehicles. Check and make sure this is not happening on your children's school buses. Spread the word!
My sister-in-law summed it up best when she said this training was well worth the time...!
I actively encourage you to gain certification in CPR. It will help prepare you for an emergency with a loved one at home or in the community. Remember that it is always important to phone the emergency response number (or 911) when an emergency arises. The operator can also be a good help in reminding you of what to do until medical personnel arrives.
You can contact the American Heart Association if you want more information on CPR, AEDs or First Aid. You can visit www.heart.org/cpr or call1-877-AHA-4CPR (877-242-4277) to find a class near you.
The Smile of Appreciation
What a wonderful day of family, learning together and fun! I think Mom would have been proud seeing us all, a collective group of sore knees, backs and wrists with much compassion and love of life.
Thanks to Debbi for providing us with such awesome training in CPR! We are all most grateful.
Thanks to my ever supportive husband who prepared a delicious luncheon for us! It was wonderful that the kids could also join us after class.
Thanks, especially, to Teddy, for putting this smile on Aunt Baby's face! She loved visiting with her doggie cousin!

What a wonderful gift to give to your family members! CPR training is so important and refresher courses are also good just to keep up to date. I never thought of giving CPR class gift certificates...but will now. Thanks! Up, useful and will tweet this.
Dear Maria,
What a wonderful idea to do this as a family. I had started reading this and got side tracked earliler so back to finish..Such a great hub to share. I know also as a nurse I dreaded taking this for the 18th time and then it got where we had to assist in teaching it to the district but the truth is..it is invaluable and you can not take CPR enough times..it could save a life or a stranger of someone you love..
Thank you,
Sunnie
That is a great idea. To learn something that could literally save a life, and to do it as a family unit. I love how you told them in a restaurant and they simply said OK. That was a very clever way to spring it on them. A friend just last night told me how she had performed CPR on her husband when he had cardiac arrest. on September 9th. The nurses told her that she had saved his life. Thank goodness she knew CPR. Thank you for this hub.
You have some great ideas in here. When my grandson was born I attended a CPR class along with his mother and father. I need to get re-certified, especially with all the recent changes. I love the idea of giving a certificate as a gift. Wonderful!
I have heard of some changes in the method of CPR. I need to read up, and this Hub reminded me. Thanks for an informative and interesting Hub.
What a wonderful gift for your family! Attending a CPR class is beneficial to them, plus a great opportunity for a family get-together (at a non-holiday occasion) after the class. Awesome hub (and I loved the pet photos).
Hi Mar, what an inspirational idea to do this as a family, wonderful.
The pictures are adorable.
Thank you for sharing this awesome hub and voting up, best wishes MM
Your first photograph is awesome!
I love it when I come across a great teacher.
Thank you for this needful missive. I totally agree with you. Everybody should know CPR. And your family idea is brilliant!!
Hi mar,
A great hub which once more proves that you a great heart.
I also like the idea of family unit learning together.
Thanks for sharing and here's to many more to share along the way.
Take care
Eiddwen.
Hi, Mar, Most interesting information that many of us fail to appreciate, a few safety precautions could just save a childs life. Thanks for sharing this with us. Cred2
Marcoujor, thanks for this well-written and informative hub about CPR and the importance of training in CPR. A niece of mine had choked to death on a grape at the age of 2, so we are all quite paranoid when it comes to children and their eating habits. My own daughter choked on a tiny toy when she was 15 months - I never thought I would be able to get something out of a child's throat - but that day I've done it. Memories still makes me shiver.
Voted up and superb :)
Mar, great point. It can and will save a life when it happens, though hopefully not to anyone. Well written and great points. Very useful. Learn it so if something happens, you are prepared. What if it is your child? Love the illustration Mar. Gets your attention.
Hi Marcoujour! I am a major supporter of learning CPR. I hope that many more people read what you have to say. And it is great to learn this as a family. Thanks so much for sharing. If only more people knew, that by taking CPR as a family, the life they save may just be their own.
Voted up, up and away!
Dear Mar ~ I second, triple and quadruple all the "brilliant" comments for the idea of gift giving the CPR class to friends and family. In your very own way, "sharing the gift of life" and spreading the ability to save a life in times of trouble. Of course, voted up and shared. Hugs, Debby
You re golden. Always inspirational, motivational and encouraging. I am glad to be your fan.
Dear Mar,
Absolutely, your Mom is so proud of you and your family. Having a mass followed by a dinner to honor your mother is awesome. And the gift of gathering the family for CPR training is priceless. In one week, it will be six years since my mom left us (Nov. 8). I know that we all miss her so much still and you've got me thinking of planning something special for next weekend. Just a few months before my mom unexpectedly died, she planned this awesome party with family and old neighbors. We played games and ate and had a blast. The adults played kid games like leg wrestling and dodge ball, hoola hoop, etc. We had so much fun. I know my Mom would have loved if we continued that tradition. We've talked about it but never did it. I think it's time. We have a video from that great day and I can show that and plan some fun games. Thank you so much my dear friend. Wishing you the best always.
Love, Sharyn
Mar, My parents taught me in childhood not to eat in moving cars, so it never ceases to amaze me when cars pass me on the road with young children busily snarfing down --- and I really mean rapid shoveling --- all kinds of gooey treats in rapid succession. Marshmallows can indeed be choking culprits.
It's really great that you had your family learn CPR. It's amazing that this recertification session, which seemed in advance to be anything but humdrum, turned out to be a really good use of time.
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards, Stessily

Wow!!! What an awesome hub with the added ability to potentially save a life if others follow your excellent example and help their family and friends learn how to do CPR.
I can't think of a better way to honor your dear mother's memory. And it was so uplifting to read about your CPR instructor, Debbi, who makes taking CPR compelling and interesting with her scenarios and teaching skills.
And the photos of Aunt Baby and Teddy were so fun and lovely.
Voted up across the board (I added funny because the photos made me chuckle)!!
Thanks so much for sharing this.
